YOUR GARDEN GATES ENQUIRY
Planning your garden gates job
Request a garden gate repair or new gate with opening, width and access needs agreed.
What to include in your enquiry
- Opening width and direction
- Purpose and latch needs
- Posts access and boundary edge
What should the quote cover?
Include supporting posts, hinges, latch, clearances, finish and adjustment.
Should the gate open onto a public path?
Do not assume that arrangement is acceptable. Discuss the actual frontage and highway/public access implications before construction.
Local property and responsibility checks
Road-edge and protected-frontage work needs property-specific checks; authority over your garden does not authorise works on public land.
- Opening width and direction
- Purpose and latch needs
- Posts access and boundary edge

Decide how the gate will be used
Quick answer
Request a quote for fitting, replacing or repairing a garden gate, with its opening, supports and intended use made clear.
A pedestrian garden gate, a wide equipment access and a vehicle gate have different requirements. State the usable opening, privacy aim, frequency of use and any accessibility needs. The whole arrangement includes supports, hinges, latch and ground clearance, not only a gate leaf. A useful quote identifies the exact design and operation. Discuss whether bicycles, bins or garden machinery need to pass through. A gate that looks attractive when closed can still be inconvenient if the opening and approach are poorly planned.
Measure the usable passage rather than the leaf alone when discussing access. A hinge arrangement, latch or post can reduce the opening. Include the route approaching the gate: a wide leaf is of little use if the path immediately behind it is too narrow for the intended equipment. Ask the business to confirm the actual clear opening and everyday operation in its written proposal.
A gate that drags or will not latch
Dragging or misalignment may involve the leaf, hinges, supports or changing ground. Do not repeatedly force it or shave material away before the cause is understood. Explain when the problem began and whether neighbouring fence sections have moved. A repair may be sufficient if the retained system is sound; replacement should still assess the supports. Ask whether the visit covers adjustment, hardware repair or a complete new gate. Cosmetic replacement without identifying the alignment problem can leave the same difficulty.
Useful next steps
Supports, opening direction and slopes
Agree the opening direction and usable swing or travel area, including any slope and obstructions. The supports need to suit the gate and its movement. Ask how the design handles ordinary ground clearance without creating unacceptable gaps. A fence panel specification is not automatically a gate-post specification. Consider safe everyday passage and maintenance access when planning hardware. If the gate is beside public access or a vehicle entrance, coordinate the layout with relevant permissions and visibility checks rather than assuming it can open anywhere.
Materials, hardware and privacy
Timber, metal and other gate materials have different appearances and care requirements. Specify the finish, latch or lock, hinges and intended level of screening. A larger solid leaf can change loading and movement, so the business should assess the full system. Ask which hardware is supplied and who holds keys where relevant. Product warranties and workmanship terms should be separate and clear. A general label such as heavy-duty gate does not describe the actual hinges, supports, dimensions or finish.
Plan opening, access and highway edges
Give the opening width, swing direction and position relative to a road or path. Confirm ownership, public access and any relevant frontage controls before building new posts or openings.

Powered gates are a specialist scope
Automation creates a machine with trapping and crushing risks that need complete-system assessment. HSE explains why competent design, installation and maintenance matter. Do not add a motor or override a safety feature as a simple accessory change. Ask for the relevant safety assessment, instructions and maintenance arrangements for the actual installation. A gate leaf and an automation package should not be treated as interchangeable work. Keep people clear of unsafe operation and seek specialist help directly.

What should this quotation actually cover?
Ask whether the quote includes…
Compare the gate, posts, hinges, latch, fitting and finishing as a complete usable opening. Ask what clear width remains and who deals with surrounding paving or an obstructed swing.
- Gate leaf, suitable supports and all agreed hardware.
- Ground clearance, finish and removal of the old gate.
- Specialist automation, records and maintenance where applicable.
| Part | Agree the practical result |
|---|---|
| Opening | Usable passage and approach. |
| Support | Post or mounting condition and suitability. |
| Hardware | Hinges, latch/lock and normal operation. |
| Automation | Separate specialist safety and maintenance scope. |
